Sandeep Lamichhane is a 17-year old budding legspinner from Nepal and is a household word there.In this blog,we are going to talk about his journey from a normal school-going boy in Syangja to an International cricketer and how he made it to the most popular league in the world,the Indian Premier League.
Early Life:
Born on August2,2000 to parents Kopila Devi and Chander Narayan Lamichhane,Sandeep migrated to India when he was small and completed his 4th standard there.It was during this time that he became a fan of cricket.He loved Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar and considered Australian leg spinner Shane Warne as his idol.When he was 14 years old,his talent was discovered by the then Nepal Coach Pubudu Dassanayake.
Career:
Sandeep made his unofficial debut for Nepal at the age of 15 against a touring MCC squad in November,2015.In his initial matches,he dismissed Hong Kong wicketkeeper,MCC player,Scott McKechnie twice.This urged Scott to pick Sandeep for Kowloon Cantons in the 1st edition of Hong Kong t20 Blitz in 2016.It was in that tournament where Australian crickter Michael Clarke noticed him.Clarke was heavily impressed with Sandeep's bowling and called him to Austalia to play club cricket under him.Sandeep played extremely well for Nepal in the ICC U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2016 where he took 14 wickets in 6 games.
International Career:
Due to his impressive performance in the U-19 World Cup,Sandeep soon got a berth in the senior national team and made his debut against Namibia in the WCL Championship.Since then he has been a regular performer for Nepal and has completely cemented his place in the National side now.Even Nepal captain Paras Khadka praises Sandeep frequenlty.Recenlty due to their combined performance,Nepal has gained ODI status from ICC.We hope that in Khadka's reign and with Sandeep's excellent bowling,Nepal will reach new heights in International Cricket.
IPL Stint:
Everyone including Sandeep was shocked when IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils picked him in the auction for Rs.20 Lakh(USD 31,000 approx).The Delhi Daredevils management called him on a trial,where he performed excellently and won their hearts.Though Sandeep is yet to play a match in the IPL,but when he does,he is going to be the first Nepali cricketer to play in the richest cricket league of the world.Delhi Daredevils has recently indicated on twitter that they are going to include him in the playing 11 very soon.
Sandeep will be sharing dressing rooms with modern day greats like Gautam Gambhir,Glenn Maxwell,Trent Boult and thereby he will gain a lot of experience at the end of this IPL.Not only IPL,Sandeep was picked in the Caribbean Premier League(CPL) too by St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots for USD 5000.Needless to say,Sandeep is going places at such a tender age and this is a great news for Nepal Cricket.
